The gallery world of the metropolis

Prague is a city where art is not hidden away in museums – it lives in the streets, palaces, modern halls, and former industrial halls. From classical masters to contemporary visual experiments, the Czech capital offers an exceptionally diverse cultural scene that inspires visitors from all over the world.

The National Gallery houses a wealth of European and world art, the Prague City Gallery maps current trends, and the DOX space explores the connection between art and society. In addition to these institutions, Prague also has dozens of smaller galleries, design and architecture museums, and interactive exhibitions that will delight children and laymen alike.

In this section, we will guide you through places where art is not only exhibited, but also thought about, discussed, and where it touches the very essence of the city.

1.National Gallery – a treasure trove of tenacious history and artistic heritage

The National Gallery in Prague, founded in 1796, is one of the most important institutions of its kind in Central Europe. The largest part of the collection is housed in four representative buildings – the Sternberg Palace with medieval European art, the Trade Fair Palace focused on modern art, the Salm Palace with Baroque and Classicist art, and Prague Castle with works by Czech masters. Iconic works include Titian, Rembrandt, Picasso, Mucha, Kupka, and Toyen.

The Trade Fair Palace also offers a unique view of the Vltava River through its large windows and connects the exhibition with decades of architecture. Admission to temporary exhibitions, guided tours, and educational programs for families make art accessible to a wide audience.

2.DOX Center – contemporary art with a touch of the world

DOX is a modern center for contemporary art, architecture, and design, founded in 2008 in a revitalized industrial hall in Holešovice. Its dominant features include a roof terrace with a beautiful view of the city and a café with an open loft space.

The exhibitions feature both established and emerging artists, often with a political or environmental focus. In addition, it organizes film screenings, debates, and workshops for children and adults. DOX is a living laboratory that transforms an old industrial space into a hub of thought and controversy.

3.Kampa Museum – a vibrant island of art by the river

On the banks of the quiet Čertovka River, which flows around Kampa Island, is the Kampa Museum – a gallery that connects 20th-century Central European art with space and nature. The museum is dominated by striking sculptures by Jiří David, Toyen, František Kupka, and other personalities. The garden pergola overlooking the Vltava River is a place for quiet reflection among the paintings and sculptures.

The museum organizes regular lectures on art history, educational programs for children, and interactive exhibitions for thoughtful visitors.

4.GHMP – the heart of contemporary culture in the city center

The Prague City Gallery (GHMP) has several locations in the city center, including the Stone Bell House, the Municipal Library, and the Masná brána. It focuses on contemporary Czech and foreign art, visual arts, and design. Exhibitions often comment on social issues, the identity of the city, and new technologies.

Masná brána offers a unique combination of history and modernity – Gothic arches and a neutral interior host well-designed exhibitions by contemporary artists. Admission is often free or available for students and seniors.

5.Umelecká beseda – a meeting of art, literature, and music

Founded in 1863, Umělecká beseda is one of the oldest cultural institutions in Prague. It is located on Národní třída in an Art Nouveau building, where exhibitions, chamber music concerts, discussions, and author readings are held. The touch of the past is visible in the curtains, the hall with a chandelier, and the gallery above the stage.

The Beseda connects artistic disciplines – in one room you can hear the piano, in another see a series of paintings. Regular lectures and concerts showcase the cultural development in the shadow of the streets of New Town.
