Places where art is created
Behind every work of art is a process – often hidden, intimate, and fascinating. However, there are places in Prague where this process is open to the public. Studios, artist residencies, and open studios offer a unique opportunity to peek behind the scenes of the creative process, meet the artists, and understand the journey that art takes from the first sketch to the gallery exhibition.
Prague is home to a whole range of visual artists, designers, photographers, and multimedia artists, many of whom work in shared spaces or participate in international residency programs. Open studios during festivals, as well as regular open days, attract the public, collectors, and curators alike.
In this overview, we will introduce you to places where art is not only exhibited, but above all created. And where you have the opportunity to become part of the creative process itself.
1.Open Studios Prague – a festival of creative encounters
The annual summer festival Open Studios Prague opens the doors to the world of art to the public – hundreds of art studios throughout Prague are transformed into places of dialogue and inspiration. Visitors can learn how painters, sculptors, designers, and digital artists work and meet the people behind the paintings and installations. The festival (the last edition took place on June 13–15, 2025) offers guided tours, workshops, art workshops, and informal talks. The opportunity to enter a studio, ask questions, or just observe the process is an experience that brings art out of the white frame of galleries and into the human world.

2.MeetFactory – industrial laboratory of creativity
MeetFactory, founded by David Černý in 2001, is located in a former glass factory in Smíchov. The space combines an art studio, theater, music, and the Artists-in-Residence program – the largest residency program in the Czech Republic (15 studios, approx. 30 foreign artists per year). MeetFactory regularly organizes “Open Studios” events, when the public can visit the studios, meet the residents, and watch new works being created. In addition, there are galleries (MeetFactory Gallery, Kostka Gallery, Wall Gallery), a music hall (50-70 concerts per year), and a theater stage.

The Pudil family’s project offers a cross-section of art from the late 19th century to the present day, with an emphasis on Central European trends and an experimental platform for residencies for foreign and domestic artists. The building won the 2022 National Architecture Award and exhibits names such as Chiharu Shiota, Gregor Hildebrandt, Lucia Moholy, and others.
